What Can You Drink While Fasting?
Stay hydrated without breaking your fast.
Staying hydrated during your fasting window is essential, but not all beverages are created equal. Some drinks will break your fast, while others are perfectly safe.
Safe to drink while fasting:
- Water — Plain still or sparkling water has zero calories and keeps you hydrated. It's the best choice.
- Black coffee — Unsweetened black coffee has near-zero calories and may even enhance fat burning. Many people find it helps suppress hunger during the morning.
- Plain tea — Green tea, black tea, and herbal teas (unsweetened) are all fine. Green tea contains EGCG, which can boost metabolism.
- Electrolyte water — Sodium, potassium, and magnesium supplements without calories are fine and help prevent headaches.
Drinks that break your fast:
- Anything with calories — juice, milk, cream, alcohol
- Diet sodas and artificially sweetened drinks (these can trigger insulin response)
- Bulletproof coffee or coffee with butter/oil (these break a fat-burning fast, though some IF protocols allow them)
The bottom line: Stick to water, black coffee, and plain tea. Your body stays in a fasting state, and you'll get through your fasting window with minimal discomfort.
